Masala Chai is one of the world’s most beloved spiced teas — a warming, aromatic blend that traces its roots to India, where it is traditionally brewed strong with black tea, milk, and sweetener. The word chai simply means “tea” in Hindi, while masala means “spice.” Together, they create a rich, invigorating drink that has become a daily ritual for millions.
At Lhasa Karnak, we carry a certified organic Masala Chai spice blend made with ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, fennel, allspice, coriander, cloves, and nutmeg. You can pair it with your favorite black tea or enjoy the spices on their own.
Ingredients
-
3 teaspoons Masala Chai Spices
-
4 cups water
-
2 tablespoons loose black tea (Assam or Darjeeling work beautifully)
-
2–3 cups milk (dairy or plant-based)
-
Sweetener to taste (honey, raw sugar, or jaggery are traditional)
Method
-
In a saucepan, bring 4 cups of water to a boil.
-
Add 3 tsp Masala Chai Spices and simmer gently for 10–20 minutes to extract the full flavor.
-
Add the black tea and simmer for 3–5 more minutes.
-
Pour in milk and sweeten to taste, then bring back to a gentle boil.
-
Strain into cups and enjoy hot.
Tips & Variations
-
For a stronger flavor, simmer the spices for up to 30 minutes before adding tea.
-
To make a caffeine-free version, skip the black tea and simply steep the spice blend with milk and sweetener.
-
Try adding fresh ginger slices or a few black peppercorns for extra warmth.
