About This Blend

The Root Tea Collection brings together five of herbalism's most revered roots — deep, earthy, and rich with tradition. Roots are among the most potent parts of the plant, slow-grown and dense with nutrients and active compounds. This blend is grounding, slightly sweet, and complex — a tea for those who like their cup with depth and character.

What's Inside

  • Burdock Root (Arctium lappa) — A beloved root in both Western and Eastern herbalism. Earthy and slightly sweet, burdock is traditionally used as a nutritive tonic and gentle support for liver and lymphatic health.
  • Dandelion Root (Taraxacum officinale) — Roasted dandelion root has a rich, coffee-like depth with a pleasantly bitter finish. A classic liver and digestive tonic, and a popular caffeine-free coffee alternative.
  • Ginger Root (Zingiber officinale) — Warming and fiery, ginger adds heat and brightness to the blend. Supports digestion and circulation, and balances the earthiness of the other roots beautifully.
  • Licorice Root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) — Naturally sweet — up to 50 times sweeter than sugar — licorice root acts as a natural sweetener and harmonizer in the blend. Soothing to the throat and digestive tract.
  • Sarsaparilla Root (Smilax ornata) — Earthy, slightly spicy, and reminiscent of old-fashioned root beer. Traditionally used as a blood tonic and for its warming, grounding properties.

How to Blend

Roots require a bit more extraction than leaves or flowers. Start with this ratio:

  • 2 parts Burdock Root
  • 2 parts Dandelion Root
  • 2 parts Sarsaparilla Root
  • 1 part Ginger Root
  • 1 part Licorice Root

Store whole or roughly chopped roots in an airtight jar. Roots keep exceptionally well — up to 2–3 years when stored properly in a cool, dark place. The licorice root provides natural sweetness, so taste before adding any additional sweetener.

Preparation Directions

Decoction (Recommended): Add 2–3 tablespoons of blend to 3 cups of cold water in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 20–30 minutes until the liquid reduces by about one third. Strain and drink warm. This method is essential for hard roots — a standard steep will not fully extract their constituents.

Quick Steep: For a lighter brew, use 1–2 teaspoons of finely cut or powdered root blend per 8 oz of boiling water. Steep covered for 15 minutes. Strain well through a fine mesh strainer. Flavor will be milder than a decoction.

Root Beer-Style Cold Drink: Make a strong decoction, strain, and cool completely. Mix with sparkling water (1 part concentrate to 2–3 parts sparkling water) over ice. The sarsaparilla and licorice give it a naturally root beer-like character — no sweetener needed.

Note: Licorice root is not recommended for those with high blood pressure or who are pregnant. These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
